FreedomPop is a relatively new company that was established in 2011 by Stephen Stokols and Steven Sesar. Its purpose is to provide free mobile phone and wireless internet services to people residing in the United States of America. FreedomPop launched in the autumn of 2012, and Freedom Pop’s high speed wireless internet service works on Sprint’s LTE network, 3G CDMA and 4G WiMax networks. FreedomPop has its headquarters in Los Angeles, California. The major investors that back FreedomPop are Skype founder Niklas Zennstom’s Atomico, Mangrove Capital and DCM.
FreedomPop allows a user to check for availability of mobile phone or internet services in their area by entering their postal ZIP code and email address. If choosing a mobile phone service, clients have the option of using their own Android or Apple Phones or purchasing a refurbished mobile phone device from FreedomPop at discounted prices. There are free basic plans for 200 voice minutes, 500 texts per month and 500 MB of LTE data. Beyond that customers can pay $20 per month for unlimited voice, texting and data. One final option is that customers can pay $10 per GB of data with the free plan.
For Internet services, the free basic plan that is offered is a 30 day trial of the premier hotspot internet services which you can cancel or downgrade anytime by contacting support. The free plan is for 500MB of data per month. The premier plan is for 2GB of data per month. There is a $29.95 activation fee. After the 30 day trial, the fee for the premier plan is a $39.99 charge once for six months of service, which equates to $6.67 a month. Most mobile phone companies charge $10 to $30 a month for 2GB of data, so FreedomPop is offering significant savings on these services.
However, at the beginning of October 2014 CEO Stephen Stokols issued an exciting press release for FreedomPop. The company will begin producing their own brand of new smart phones and tablets, but what’s even more exciting is the price. These devices will be offered for under the $100.00 price range to keep in the tradition of providing affordable services to Americans. The first model to be released is a 7 inch tablet called the Liberty Freedom. FreedomPop plans to produce its own brand name LTE products in the future, along with phones. These devices are to be manufactured overseas, in order to keep the costs affordable.
The refurbished brand named phones that FreedomPop offers are Apple iPhone 5, LG Viper 4G LTE (LS840), Samsung Galaxy SIII and Samsung Galaxy S4. FreedomPop also sells tablets from Apple and Samsung. FreedomPop is looking to access a larger reach of customers every day. Check out their website or Twitter page for more details.
